The Dubois County Museum announces their planned programs for the month of October 2024. The
programs range from fun activities for families, educational workshop for those wanting to
learn more about historical forestry, a fun day planned at the farm and a night of Halloween
fun.
Monthly ongoing programs include a meeting by the Model Train Club on the second Monday
of the month (October 14) to enjoy and work on model trains. New members are welcome.
The “Beauty and the Barber Shop” exhibit continues till the end of October. It explores the
history of the beauty and barber shop industry.
Carrie Holdsworth will host Storytime on Saturday, October 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the Little
Pioneer Area. This month’s theme is “Fire Safety”. Stories, crafts and activities are planned
around this theme. This program is sponsored by Optimist Club of Jasper.
On Thursday, October 17, the Dubois County Historical Society will meet for their fall meeting
and dinner. Doors to the museum open at 6:00 p.m. The catered meal is served at 6:30 p.m.
Meeting and a speaker will follow. New members welcome. Gary Eck, president.
The museum welcomes the Four Rivers Forestry Committee to the museum on Saturday
morning, October 19, from 10-11:00 a.m. They will take a look back in time at Indiana’s forests,
and the local woodworking industry that grew from them. Guest speaker will be A.J. Ariens.
Ariens is the Forest Archeologist with the IDNR Division of Forestry. She will discuss her study
of Indiana’s original survey records, and what is documented about the forests and tree species
present at that time. Doug Brown, Private Consultant Forester and Forestry Committee
member will then discuss how this relates to present day forest management. This event is free
to attend. Museum entry fees for attendees will be covered by the Four Rivers Forestry
Committee. They invite you to stay afterwards and browse the museum’s woodworking

Fall Harvest Day is Sunday, October 20, from 1-4 p.m. at the museum. A full afternoon of Family
Fun is planned. Pony rides for the youngsters will be given, a petting zoo available, apple cider
and homemade ice cream will be served, blacksmithing shown, tombstone carving by historic
methods demonstrated, a working loom will be operating, face painting by Ruth Kuebler will be
available, farm experts on the antique machinery will be available to explain machinery, model

trains running, corn shucking, shelling and grinding will be available, molasses making and
honey extracting with sampling explained, and the Patoka River Strummers will entertain from
1:30-3:00 p.m. Come out…enjoy and learn.
The month of programs concludes at the museum with the annual Spooky Streets Halloween
Fun Night. The Museum will open for a free evening on Thursday, October 24, from 5:30-7:30
p.m. Our young visitors can prowl the dim lit Main Street area, ever watchful for those who try
to scare you. Crafts, activities and ice cream will be await in the Log House area after making it
through the spooky streets.. Our young visitors are asked to come in costume. No reservations
needed for this evening. A small donation is asked to cover the costs. The lobby volunteers will
distribute a goody bag to the first 100 youngsters as the youngsters leave.
