On Sunday, August 14, beginning at 1:15pm EST and ending at about 2:45pm, the Dubois County Museum will host Military Appreciation Day, at the museum.  Light refreshments will follow the program.

The program speakers will speak about the Civil War, the Vietnam War and World War II.

The first speaker is Zachary Flynn, a Jasper High School student who has been working on his Eagle Scout project at the Dubois County Museum and its Military Exhibit. He is the son of Julia and Shane Flynn and the grandson of Janet and Dave Kluemper. He will explain how he has entirely rearranged the military area at the museum. His in depth research has been on artifacts from Col. C. C. Schreeder who fought during the Civil War and was active in the Grand Army of the Republic, a veteran’s organization that formed in 1866 and was made up of veterans of the Union Army, Union Navy, Union Marines, and the United States Revenue Cutter Service who served the American Civil War for the Northern/Federal forces.  The GAR ceased in 1956 when its last member died.

The second speaker is Steve Chastain, of Celestine, who was in the Vietnam War from 1969-1970.  He will speak on the everyday living conditions of an infantry man in the jungles of Vietnam.

The last speaker is Phil Bartelt of Huntingburg.  He is presenting his father’s slides and artifacts from WW II. His father was Wilfred Edward Bartelt of Huntingburg.  The elder Bartelt was in Army Intelligence} and left memorabilia of high interest on Omaha, the Bulge in Belgium, and Buchenwald among a few.
